Rouen

Rouen, France is the capital of the Normandy region. It is an hour and half by train from Paris. This city is home to Place du Vieux-Marche, the square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Cobblestone sidewalks can be seen throughout the pedestrian walkways. Gothic churches, such as Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen as well as the Gros-Horloge Clock are some of the sights. In December, the town square is filled with Christmas market booths selling mulled wine and trinkets.

Bullet Holes

Rouen City Walls

During World War II(1940-1944), Rouen was under German occupation. As a result of the city being a German stronghold, the Allies dropped approximately 6000 artillery shells from the sky in April, 1944. Consequently, Rouen took heavy damage and 45% of the city was destroyed. Today, the buildings throughout Rouen are seen riddled with bullet holes.
