The Sights of Madrid

I spent a total of 9 days in Spain, 5 in Madrid, 3 in Barcelona, and 1 in Toledo. This is enough time to see the sights for each city, respectively. I could easily spend 3-4 days in Barcelona if it is my first visit. This amazing city is easily accessible via train (2.5 hours). Toledo is a nice option for a day trip as its only 30 minutes by train.

Madrid, the magnificent and vibrant capital of Spain, is ideal for travelers seeking for a combination of rich cultural experiences and stunning natural surroundings. This dynamic metropolis is enriched with beautiful sights, green parks, open air squares, delectable restaurants, and buzzing throughfares.

With a population of 3.4 million people, Madrid is a big city with plenty to offer. Its extensive and user-friendly metro system makes it easy for visitors to get around and see all of the incredible sights and sounds. Whether you are looking to explore the historic landmarks, indulge in some delicious traditional Spanish cuisine, or simply soak up the vibrant atmosphere, Madrid is the perfect destination.

The Best Plazas in Madrid

Plaza Del Sol

Madrid is a treasure trove of stunning plazas and sights that are adorned with meticulously crafted statues, awe-inspiring monuments, and invigorating water fountains. Amongst the city is a plethora of striking plazas worthy of mention. Located in the heart of the city, Plaza Del Sol, meaning “Gate of the Sun” is a haven for tourists and locals alike who flock to admire its iconic Tio Pepe lit sign.

Plaza Mayor is a magnificent square bustling with life. You will find restaurants to savor delectable delicacies and shops to indulge in retail shopping. If that’s not enough, the plaza transforms into one of the city’s most captivating Christmas markets during the festive season. All in all, these plazas and sights are a testament to the city’s culture, history, and vibrant atmosphere that will leave you awestruck and enchanted.

Plaza de Espana is undoubtedly one of the most awe-inspiring public spaces in Madrid, Spain. Its location, off the Gran Via, is essential to its splendor in attracting tourists and locals alike. This magnificent public square has beautiful green lawns that stretches out before you. In the center of the lawn are several captivating water fountains that add to the serene ambiance of the place.

As you meander around, you will see many available seats where you can unwind, take in the incredible views and soak in the sun’s warmth. During December, the plaza transforms into an enchanted Christmas wonderland. Schweppes Building on the Gran Via

Madrid is a beautiful city full of stunning landmarks, and two of its most notable sights are the Schweppes building and the RIU Hotel. Of these two awe-inspiring structures, the Schweppes building is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and recognizable sights to see on the Gran Via. This building is featured in countless paintings, photographs, and postcards highlighting Madrid’s most beautiful landmarks.

Constructed in 1933, the Schweppes building is a true marvel of design and architecture. Made from an exquisite blend of marble and granite, the Schweppes building towers above the bustling streets of Madrid. This offers visitors an unparalleled view of the city’s skyline. With its prime location alongside Callo Square, the Schweppes building is truly a wonder to behold and should absolutely be on your list of must-see sights when visiting Madrid.

RIU Hotel

Line For The Top

The top floor of the RIU Hotel is a great place to get stunning views of the city. Located right across from Plaza de Espana, the hotel’s prime location makes it easy to explore the city’s many offerings. A ticket for the top floor costs just 10 euros. Keep in mind that the entrance to the top floor is on the back side of the building.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Madrid’s skyline. Here you will have the opportunity to snap an awe-inspiring picture on the ledge off the edge of the building. However, it’s important to note that there may be a line to take this coveted photo. The wait time per party is generally around 10 minutes and the line isn’t regulated by hotel staff.

After arriving up top, I waited for nearly 30 minutes. During this time, I moved a measly 15 feet. After deciding not to wait, I walked around the top and ended up finding an alternate location on the other side of the building. A minor drawback, however, is there is no view of the palace. It is still a good photo opportunity without the long wait.

Madrid’s Cathedral is an incredible architectural wonder that is located conveniently beside the Royal Palace in the heart of Madrid. This extravagant structure, built during the 19th and 20th centuries, is not only stunning to look at but also has the most spectacular crypt chapel in all of Spain. As you step through the cathedral’s doors, you’ll be transported to a world of grandeur, with its ornate carvings, breathtaking stained glass windows, and majestic vaulted ceilings.

This Spanish cathedral is definitely a must-see for anyone visiting Madrid. What’s more, it is the only cathedral in the country that has been consecrated by a Pope. Best Souvenirs From Spain

Spanish Souvenirs

Spain is famous for its great cuisine and its fascinating cultural traditions. One of the best things to bring back home as a souvenir from Madrid is a Paella pan! These pans come in a wide range of sizes and designs and are perfect for whipping up your own paella dish at home. You can opt for a traditional one or choose a more modern or eclectic version that suits your style.

Not only that, but you can also get other Spanish souvenirs that are equally delightful, such as a cute flamenco doll, a spoon rest, and a flamenco sarong. These souvenirs help ensure that you never forget the amazing time you spent in Madrid. Lastly, they also make great gifts for family and friends who want to experience the beauty and excitement of Madrid for themselves.

El Rastro Market

El Rastro is undeniably one of the most popular markets in Madrid. This colorful and vibrant market is located in the vicinity of Puerta de Toledo and operates only on Sundays. It is the perfect place for tourists to explore and get a taste of the Spanish culture, as it offers an array of desirable goods. From leather accessories to unique jewelry, delicious food, clothing, handbags, and records, El Rastro has it all.

However, as exciting and wonderful as this market may be, it is crucial to remain vigilant of pickpockets. Therefore, to have a safe and enjoyable experience at El Rastro, I recommended keeping your bags in front and avoid carrying valuables in your pockets.
