Cerro Tortuguero is a magnificent hike that takes you through the breathtaking views of an inactive volcano. The easy access to the volcano via a 15-minute boat ride on a water taxi makes it a must-visit destination for all adventure lovers. The ascent to the top is not only an energizing and peaceful activity, but it also rewards you with awe-inspiring views of Tortuguero National Park and the Caribbean Sea.

The feeling of looking down upon the world from the top of the volcano is phenomenal. Although the hike to the top can get a little challenging, the view from the summit is worth it. I was able to complete the hike in 20 minutes. Once you reach the top, take in the stunning surroundings that Cerro Tortuguero offers.

How to get to Cerro Tortuguero

Beginning of the hike

Take the water taxi from the main dock for $2 each way. The boat leaves about every two hours. The journey is about 15 minutes long and you are dropped off at the base of the hike. You can easily obtain the schedule for the boat from any local tour office and the payment is made directly to the boat captain.

If you’re planning to explore the national park, don’t forget to purchase a $2 ticket beforehand, as it is only available online . Doing the hike on your own is more cost-effective than paying an exorbitant $40 for a tour. So, getting around and enjoying the sights can be done on a budget of just $6.

Boat Schedule for Cerro Tortuguero

Boat Schedule

Here is the boat schedule as of 1/2024. It is important to note that the boat that drops you off at the hike will remain stationary and wait for the pre-arranged departure time. Be aware that if you choose to not take this particular boat back, you will have to wait a couple of hours for the next one.

While this may be an inconvenience, many visitors have found this downtime to be an excellent opportunity to take in the breathtaking scenery and relax. I personally enjoyed the picturesque view for about 10 minutes before heading back to catch the same boat.
